weekend assignment
I feel happy I get to meet kids like me. I am scared about bieng in front of the class. I am also confused how a old person like professor mumbleby can still teach. I am happy I have a friend named bella. I am amazed how kids can make a mini weather station that makes fog.

The Girl Who Could Fly - Journal Entry
Piper is happy that she can fly but is sad because she is not allowed to fly. She is sad she has no friends because she is different and her parents don’t let her go out of the house. Her parents don’t let her out of the house because they are afraid she will start floating. She is lonely because she has no friends and does not go to school. At the picnic on the 4th of July she plays baseball at gets thrown out of the game. She got angry and flew and caught the ball. She felt happy but everybody was scared and confused.

SUMMER WRITING ASSIGNMENT
William Penn Charter School
English Department
2010 Summer Reading: 6th Grade
The goals of summer reading for incoming 6th graders are for your teachers to get to know you as a reader and a writer and for you to experience the joy of reading.
• Required Reading:
The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
These books will be discussed in class during the first two weeks of school, and students will be assessed on both novels.
• Required Journal:
You will also need to type two, page-long journal entries per book. The purpose of these journals is not to summarize the plots of the two novels, but rather to share your observations and thoughts on characters and events. There are no wrong answers! Have fun with this and explore!
Ideas for topic sentences (you may come up with your own)

• Other Summer Reading Choices:
Students should also keep a list on a separate sheet of paper of any other books that they read over the summer. This will help us understand what kind of reader you are and what kind of books you like to read. Here are some favorite authors of sixth graders in the past:
Ursula K. LeGuin Carl Hiaasen Virginia Hamilton
Anne McCaffrey Gary Soto Lloyd Alexander
Rick Riordan Philip Pullman Sharon Creech
Madeleine L’Engle Lawrence Yep Susan Cooper
Cynthia Voight Walter Dean Myers Brian Jacques

Baseball
I play baseball in the spring. Baseball is my favorite sport. I have played baseball for 4 years in chestnut hill.
I play baseball in the minor leagues. There are no leads and no steals. There is 1 big rule in baseball. Once you hit the ball run fast. When I play baseball I am happy. The field is a big diamond. People are cheering for you and it is loud. The field is medium size. The dirt is brown and the grass is green. On some days we play in the rain. Once I pitched in the rain. The ball was very slippery. Last year I played catcher. I was good in the field but not good at bat. This year I am better in the field and a lot better at bat. For example, last year I got 2 singles. This year I got 11 singles, 12 doubles, 4 triples, and a 2 run home run. I realize the reason I got better was self confidence.
Today I am in the all stars representing Chestnut Hill and am proud. I play center field, pitcher, 3rd base, and shortstop.
